Nails

The nails don’t contain any blood vessels or nerves, they are composed of dead cells. Deep under the nail there are nerves and blood vessels. Blood vessels take care for the healthy pink colour of the nail bed. Your nails grow approximately 3mm per month. Imagine that you have no nails; it will then take almost six months before having a complete nail. The matrix – the most important composition part of the nail – is situated from the last finger joint until the semi-moon (lunula, Latin diminutive from luna, which means moon) of your nail. The new nail cells are getting produced in the matrix. You nails are composed of layers, which are connected to each other with some moisture and fat.

For the convenience, we divide the nail condition in three categories:

-          normal (flexible, natural colour, natural shine)

-          hard, dry (blistered, broken, splits, yellow, dull, ridges)

-     soft, thin (too flexible, splits, cracks easily)

FAQ

Are the white spots on my nails due to a lack of calcium?

No, white spots on the nails appear because of the air that got between the nail cells due of, for example, damaging or cutting the nails. These spots will disappear by themselves as the nail grows. You can also prevent the air coming between the nail cells by regular application of nail polish.

I’ve always had some kind of ridges on my nails, how come?

This can have different reasons. It can be an internal nail matter, but also, for example, because you’ve been washing you hands too often with water and that’s how your nails dry out. Also the older you get the more ridges you will have. Our product advice: Nourishing Nail Oil and Ridge Filling Base Coat

My nails break very easily. Should I use a nail hardener?

Not necessarily. It’s possible that your nails are too hard and too dry, and because of that they are no more flexible. That’s why they can’t stand even a light bump and break. In that case the best what you can do is to use nourishing nail oil. Our product advice: Herôme Nourishing Nail Oil

My nails are too weak and crack constantly. Is it a good idea to put artificial nails?

If you do so most probably your nails will become even weaker and thinner. It is better to restore your nails by using a nail hardener, that will make you nails longer and stronger. Always read the instructions before use. Our product advice: Herôme Nail Hardeners (Soft, Strong or Extra Strong)

Filling is better for my nails than cutting, but I do not have time to do that.

You are right, filling is better than cutting your nails because cutting will damage them. Filling with a glass file is efficient and fast. By keeping your nails in a good and shaped condition, filling will not take a lot of time. Our product advice: Herôme Glass Nail File

I think that I have very hard nails, but they break frequently. Can you give me an advice?

It can be the case that your nails are too hard. Try to softly bend your nail edges. If it doesn’t work, the nail is indeed too hard and too dry, and that is the reason why it’s not flexible enough. Our product advice: Herôme Nourishing Nail Oil or Herôme Hydrating Nail Gel

I can’t stop biting my nails and most of the times they look terrible. I’ll appreciate a good advice.

It is easy to stop with the nail biting – make sure they taste disgusting. Afterwards your nails will need a good repair treatment. Our product advice: Herôme Bye Bite

Why is a glass file better for the nails?

This has to do with the structure of the file surface. Glass file has a finer structure and therefore during the filing it closes and protects the nail edge. Another advantage of a glass file is that it never gets worn down. You should always file in one direction, from the outside to the middle of your nail. Otherwise the nail layers will get loose from each other, and dirt, bacteria and air bubbles can get into the nail. Our product advice: Herôme Glass Nail File

My nails split on the edges and I can even fetch a layer. Is there a solution?

Your nails split up and that’s due to a lack of protein - it has a function of glue which keeps the nail cells together. A nail hardener can do miracles for this kind of problems. Our product advice: Herôme Nail Hardeners (Soft, Strong and Extra Strong)

My employer (in the health care) has forbidden the wearing of a nail polish. But I like when my nails look good and nourished. Help!

There is still a way to make your nails look good and nourished without applying the nail polish. By polishing your nails with a polishing file you will make them shiny and they will look better immediately. Our product advice: Herôme Super Shine

When I removed the artificial nails, I got scared of what has happened with my own natural nails. Are the artificial nails that bad, and what can I do to get beautiful nails again?

Artificial nails are indeed not good for your natural nails - they don’t allow your natural nails to breath. Your nails will get better, but it will take some time. Our product advice: Herôme Exit Damaged Nails

My nails crack, and they are too flexible. What now?

Your nails are then too weak, which is caused by lack of calcium and keratin. Our product advice: Herôme Nail Hardeners (Soft, Strong and Extra Strong)

I often have yellow nails and it seems hopeless. Is there something that can be done?

It’s possible that you have problems with your health, so we would first recommend you to visit a doctor. Also, dry nails very often become yellow. For example, use of the nail hardeners with bad quality dries out your nails. Our product advice: Herôme Nourishing Nail Oil or Herôme Hydrating Nail Gel

I have vertical openings in my nails and it is far from beautiful. What can I do?
