Cuticles

The cuticle protects the matrix and the nail root, and it has indeed an important function.

The cuticle is a skin-fold growing on the nail base over the lunula (the semi-moon on your nails), on the side of the nail and under the nail edge.

We divide the cuticle also in three categories, based on their condition:

-     normal (elastic, it is free from the nail)

-     dry (cracks easy, unsettled coats, dead skin particles)

-     fixed (stuck on the nail, hinders the nail growth, causes ridges)

FAQ

My nails grow so slowly, how is that possible?

A reason can be that your cuticles are stuck and hinder the nail growth. Use a product that soaks off the cuticles, and a product that keeps them flexible. With the second product you massage the nail bed and that stimulates the nail growth. Our product advice: Herôme Cuticle Remover

I cut the cuticles regularly because I find this look good. But now it looks like they grow faster and faster. How is this possible?

The cuticles have one function: protection of the nail matrix. If this function will be hindered by cutting or removing the cuticles, your body is going to defend itself by replacing the missing tissue with an extra thick and hard material. The more you remove the cuticles, the more intensively your body will react. That's why you should always clean the cuticles gently and nourish them with the necessary material (without scissors or biting off ). Our product advice: Herôme Wonderpen and Cuticle Stick

My cuticles look and feel dry and they crack. What is your advice?

The cuticles crack because they are too dry and they are stuck on your nails. Use oil or a crème and after that push the cuticles back using a cuticle pusher. Our product advice: Herôme Cuticle Cream and Cuticle Stick

On my thumb nails I have deep, horizontal ridges. I want to get rid of them.

These ridges can be inherited or can be a consequence of rubbing over the cuticles of your thumb. Some people have this as a habit. Pushing back the cuticle too far can be also the reason of it. It damages the nail root and that causes gaps. You should stop with both of the habits.
